Introduction
Background: 1
River Raisin NBP preserves, commemorates, and interprets the January 1813 battles of the War of 1812 and their aftermath. Battles that resulted in the greatest victory for Tecumseh’s Confederation and the British and the greatest defeat for the U.S. The aftermath led to U.S. Indian laws that forced the removal, relocation, and assimilation of native nations, an aftermath that continues today.

Many people are surprised to learn how important the Great Lakes region was in shaping the United States and how this war, involving several nations, still matters today. On this driving tour, you can explore places that help explain why centuries of European expansion in North America led to a major conflict. The bloodiest fighting happened in Southeast Michigan. Here, you can learn about what happened after the battles and how these events continue to affect nations and individuals. The Battlefield includes several sites in Monroe and Wayne Counties connected to the January 1813 Battles of Frenchtown and their aftermath.
